Wake Forest 55, NC State 53

Chris Paul vs. some Cameron-Crazy-wanna-be NC State fans. Just screams “classy,” doesn’t it? However, I had to link to this story for this quote: “I got punched in my groin by Chris Paul.” Update: Looks like Chris got suspended for a game. (Oddly enough, it could be the next game against NC State.) In further news, NC State fans might be suspended from watching their school in the NCAA Tournament, if the Pack doesn’t pick it up in the ACC Tournament. ...

"You couldn't write a book with that ending."

UNC seniors Melvin Scott, Jackie Manuel, Jawad Williams Source: CollegeSports.com UNC 75, Duke 73 on Senior Day at Carolina. Good article by Adam Lucas. “I’d like to thank the coaching staff for helping me find myself,” Jackie Manuel said. That’s when those tears came for the head coach. (sniff) You’d have to know the history behind the seniors’ time at UNC to understand why winning the ACC title in their last year was so great. For a perennially good basketball program, it was a chaotic four years for guys who are growing up at the same time. ...

"And to your left...RUN, it's coming right for us!"

When I was a kid, I used to start when I walked into a natural history museum because of the ubiquitous whale model that would be hanging from the ceiling, right over my head. As a result, I don’t think I’m ever going into a Japanese natural history museum now.

The Jovian Sun

Astronomers have found a full-fledged star, complete with fusion, that appears to be only 16 percent bigger than Jupiter. Wow, so Jupiter could potentially light off as a star? Cool. :)

ChoicePoint, Hacked or Defrauded?

It’s interesting that the ChoicePoint CISO feels the need to point out that they haven’t been hacked, but were defrauded in a way that happens every day. So, ChoicePoint is not responsible for protecting against the most common threats, or is it just that the CISO’s position isn’t responsible for it at ChoicePoint? Here’s a previous entry on this matter.

Obesity in pro athletes

Is it really the case that 56 percent of NFL players are obese? And why is this taken seriously by the AP? These folks probably know a bit better. BMI doesn’t scale well. It’s a simple height/weight formula that doesn’t even have the advantage of the arbitrariness of the old charts. I’m willing to admit that the BMI’s assessment of me may be pretty accurate, but that probably has more to do with the fact that I’m in the middle of the pack in height, am not an athlete, and sheer luck than anything else. (Actually, it can’t even be that accurate with me. In order to get to the middle of the normal weight range, I’d have to weigh what I did when I was fifteen and my ribs were sticking out. :) ) ...

Nando is no more

At least the name. I worked up the stairs from Nando Media for a few weeks during a stint with The News & Observer, and I used a content management system they had programmed in Perl. It’s too bad that the name is going away, given its evidence of the Raleigh newspaper’s pioneering role in online journalism, but I’m glad they aren’t getting rid of the company.

Feeding My Ego, or The Making of a Dictator

While I’ve often thought of becoming a dictator, I had no idea my blog could lead me to such power. Seriously, this is a bizarre article. The author goes from Paris Hilton’s cameraphone to Saparmurat Niyazov, “President for Life” of Turkmenistan, in the space of seven paragraphs. It’s as if someone tried to edit a rambling thesis down to one page. Link courtesy of Techdirt, which needs to brush up on its dictators, but otherwise makes a good point. :) ...
