Brainstorm rains on the Internet

I wince when I hear I’m invited to a brainstorming session. I understand why people have them, but I prefer for the ideas that I communicate to be in some sort of thought-out, vetted condition. In other words, I don’t like spouting whatever bizarre idea pops into my head until I think about it. (I save the bizarre ideas for when I’m bored in regular meetings.) :) What we seem to have here is a big brainstorming session on how to save the Internet from growing security and noise risks. At least I think it must have been, because folks came up with ideas such as this one: ...

Nuke testing in "Sudan"

Hmm, I drove my sudan to work this morning. :) Looks like a transcript of a Congressional hearing came close to ruining the day for American and Sudanese government officials. Sometimes when you conduct secret nuclear tests in Sedan, it sounds like Sudan. What I’d like to know is what enterprising diplomat from Sudan came up with the idea of immediately blaming the U.S. for cancer cases from a nuclear test that didn’t happen there? I’m surprised that story didn’t get more play. ...

I know, I know

I haven’t posted in a while. Busy. Buying house. Working. Thinking about house. Celebrating. Inspecting house. All that kind of thing. :) Well, okay, I’m not that busy, but it does take a lot of energy. Cue the Saturday Night Live version of the first Presidential debate from 2004: Lehrer – And what happens in phase three? Bush – Jim, we’re still working on phase three. You know, huh, and believe me…we’re working hard…‘cause it’s, huh, it’s hard work…and we’re…working hard…every day…working evenings…ordering in…working hard together…now to answer your question, we don’t know all the details yet. But basically on phase three, we crush the terrorists and hold elections, so that the Iraqi people can choose their own destiny. Because I believe all people want freedom, don’t you? ...

UNC cuttin' down those nets

I honestly do not understand the controversy over UNC cutting down the nets after winning the ACC regular season. I wonder if Duke thinks the ACC regular season title is “pathetic?” ;) While it might be excessive under the old Carolina Tradition, this is the same team that hadn’t finished in the top three at any point during their careers. The seniors had suffered through the infamous 8-20 season and came back to win the ACC. That was a long journey for them, and one unlikely to happen again. (Heck, I thought they should have put the NIT banner up after that 8-20 season. How often do you get to see playoff basketball at the Dean Dome involving UNC?) ...

MP3 Players: Gotta Catch 'Em All?

USA Today runs an article that basically sounds like the rewriting of a press release from the Ponemon Institute. (I really wish he had run something from the Pokémon Institute instead.) The article itself is basically a scare piece about the idea that MP3 players could record your personal information, music files, and digital photos, and share them over Bluetooth with nearby eavesdroppers. (Engadget has a few reasons why that logic is flawed. ‘Ware of shiny MP3 players. ;) ) ...

49th Parallel

Just watched 49th Parallel (1941) off the DVR tonight, and despite missing the last few minutes because of a scheduling glitch, I would have to say it’s the best Nazis escaping across Canada movie I’ve ever seen. And why wouldn’t it be, with an all-star cast — including Laurence Olivier, Leslie Howard, and Raymond Massie — featured prominently in the credits? It was even nominated for a Best Picture Oscar in 1942. ...
