GE/Durham: Engines of Democracy

GE/Durham makes the pages of Fast Company. GE/Durham has more than 170 employees but just one boss: the plant manager. Everyone in the place reports to her. Which means that on a day-to-day basis, the people who work here have no boss. They essentially run themselves. Link courtesy of Jeremy Zawodny’s blog

Garfield without thought balloons

This is fascinating. It’s just Jon talking to a cat that never answers. They should run Garfield like this for a year and see what happens. :)

Four Things

A Lists of Four meme that’s going around the Internets. I haven’t been tagged by anyone to do it, but it looked interesting: Four jobs I’ve had in my life: Security Guard Temp Reporter Webmaster Four movies I can watch over and over: Napoleon Dynamite Galaxy Quest Dune Wings of Desire Four TV shows I love to watch: Veronica Mars Battlestar Galactica Fullmetal Alchemist The Office (After considering it for a while, I had to remove MST3K. I watch The Office far more regularly, and actually find it really relaxing during a long week. Highly recommended, along with its partner in crime: My Name is Earl.) Four places I’ve been on vacation: ...

Puppy Bowl II

Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl II. Slightly more organized than the Super Bowl. Man, that poodle is a freak. ;) The black and brown beagle’s got some sense, though. Hang out on the outside…sniff around. Don’t forget the Bissell Kitty Half Time Show. Thrill to daring attack runs that abruptly end as the attacker figures out the other cat is looking at them. :)

Cthulego Rises

H. P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos never looked quite so blocky. :) Cthulego Rises is an incredibly complex Lego scene depicting a chase between villains after lost gold and an heroic adventurer flying a Zeppelin. Cool enough, but the fact those villains are fleeing in terror from the monsters they have awakened puts this diorama over the top. Link courtesy of Sci Fi Wire

Here again, gone again, here again

Yep, after over a year of updating this site on a regular basis, somehow the last few months have proven remarkably challenging on that front. Just when I thought things were starting to calm down at work, and I was going to have some more time to blog, suddenly things changed. :| Anyway, long story short, I’m now managing our primary Web presence. That proved pretty busy when it was just me and our programmer handling everything. We’ve hired someone to help out, though, and that is working out well. I’m hoping I’ll have a bit more time, as I catch up all the stuff that piled up while I was too busy to think about it. ...

Duke/UNC tonight

The Rivalry heats up again tonight, with Duke playing at Carolina. Given Carolina’s personnel losses, Duke would seem to have the advantage, but this series never works out that easily. (Anyone else thinking of the 1995 double-overtime thriller which a powerful UNC team barely managed to win against one of the weaker Duke teams in recent memory?) I’m hoping UNC can keep a guy on J. J. Redick tonight. Given Duke’s recent game plan of “Get him the ball,” that can prove difficult. Ah, Jackie Manuel, why couldn’t you have just one more year of eligibility? ...

Wide-open spaces

When you can run around the world in less than a second, even the largest city would have to seem small and boring. So how does the Flash handle it? Easy, he lives in Central City, the city with no limits, 10-lane streets, and giant sidewalks. The Absorbacon has an funny pictorial review of how the artists handled drawing a city big enough for The World’s Fastest Man. Just imagine the run-off from rain over all that pavement. Of course, I doubt weather systems usually affected the entire city at once. :) ...
