Former Majority Leader Tom Delay is stepping down from the U.S. House of Representatives, after a scandal-plagued couple of years. Maybe now he’ll go around the country, speaking at conservative gatherings, telling everyone the main problem with this country is corrupt politicians. Tyler Hansbrough of UNC, and J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams of Duke, were unanimous picks for the All-Conference team in ACC men’s basketball. Hansbrough is the first freshman in ACC history to earn a unanimous selection. UNC’s David Noel and Reyshawn Terry also made the second and third teams, respectively, giving UNC more All-ACC players than any other school. Pretty good, when you’re picked to finish sixth. :)

I probably won’t write much about Friday’s attack on UNC’s campus, except to note how thankful I am that no one was killed. My capacity for being surprised by the evil things that people do is sadly diminished after a few decades of living on this Earth, but my capacity for understanding hasn’t increased enough to really get why people do them. What I will say is this: No matter what reason he drove a Jeep through a popular campus gathering spot, Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar could not have known who was going to be in front of his car. He didn’t know their thoughts or feelings about him, or the things that concerned him. He didn’t know where they had come from or where they were going. He didn’t know about their ambitions or fears or loves. Either he was incapable of caring about those people as individual humans; or he didn’t care; or he cared, and still decided it didn’t matter enough. In the end, they were treated as objects of lesser value than his goal. And this was by a graduate of the same school’s programs in psychology and philosophy? ...

Weird for a young team. Starts two freshmen, brings several more off the bench, goes 3-3 at home in the ACC so far, and wins 6 games out of 7 on the road. Two of those wins this season were against NC State, which is supposed to have an experienced team on the upswing. The win last night was business-like, not the result of a young team riding a wave of emotion. This UNC team is incredibly mature, considering the lack of experience, and could prove a formidable opponent for a lot of NCAA Tournament teams in March. ...

Well, if you are reading this, you are seeing it on a new web host ( Textdrive) and an upgraded WordPress installation (2.0.1). Of course, I end up doing both of the changes at the same time, unintentionally. Lesson learned: When dealing with two similar installations, always make sure you’re on the right one before making any crucial changes. :) No problems with my previous web host ( Lunarpages). UNC freshman record…Dean E. Smith Center record…ACC freshman record…one point behind the current ACC high score. What more can be said? Last night was the first time I’d seen a team come out and try to really beat up Hansbrough. Georgia Tech deserved every foul they got…it was the college version of Hack-a-Shaq. Problem is, Hansbrough was still putting the ball into the basket, and he’s good at free throws. Pretty amazing performance. ...
