Nando is no more

At least the name. I worked up the stairs from Nando Media for a few weeks during a stint with The News & Observer, and I used a content management system they had programmed in Perl. It’s too bad that the name is going away, given its evidence of the Raleigh newspaper’s pioneering role in online journalism, but I’m glad they aren’t getting rid of the company.

Male/Female Brain?

You know, according to this test, my brain rates at 100% female. (“I feel pretty, oh so pretty…”) ;) Kind of weird, since my scores on each individual part always fall closer to the male range and never go above the average for female. I don’t think I would have been surprised by a somewhat “female” score, but I think the 100% score may be an error. Maybe I should have taken it in Internet Explorer. ...

Happy Valentine's Day

I am happy. I am happy that I was able to share the day with my Valentine, a bright, beautiful, brilliant woman who makes life better than I ever thought it could be…who makes me better than I ever thought I could be. Happy Valentine’s Day, Lorrie. I can only aspire to bring as much happiness to you.

Not setting expectations

The unfortunate brief description of this column in the Chronicle of Higher Education was A music professor who prides himself on his cultural sensitivity suddenly finds it wanting in the classroom of an urban university. As you can see, while the author talks about his cultural sensitivity and the challenges of teaching in a multicultural classroom, the hook for the story doesn’t seem to have much to do with culture. Essentially, the story revolves around two students who simply did not feel it necessary to respect the class or anyone in it, and then left after midterms. Given that he doesn’t mention problems with the other students or any specifics about the troublesome pair — something that may have fallen out in the editing — I’m not sure why this would be a cultural issue so much as the kind of discipline issue teachers run into all the time. ...

The Cookies of Impending Doom

Somehow I just don’t see how the court awards even the medical expenses in this case. I feel sorry for the lady, but an anxiety attack could be triggered by a lot of things, not just people leaving cookies at your door.

Not Mountain Dew

I am not drinking Mountain Dew right now. I am drinking Lipton Brisk Lemon Iced Tea (with other natural flavors) out of a can. I pressed the button on the machine for Mountain Dew, but apparently the drink machine guy is looking out after my health and wellbeing. It’s not bad. I grew up drinking iced tea, before I discovered the Mountain Dew elixir, but I don’t understand the label “with other natural flavors.” It tastes like tea with lemon, which tastes like tea, lemon juice, sugar, and water. All pretty much expected in lemon iced tea. What would the other natural flavors include…aluminum can? ...

Ah, the smells of North Florida

When I was a kid, we’d head south once a year from North Carolina to Palatka, Florida, to visit my dad’s side of the family. I remember the long stretches of flatland in South Carolina, avoiding Atlanta as much as possible, and even longer stretches of swamp and scrub pine forest once you got close to Florida. But what I remember the most is that you could tell where you were once you got down there from the smells. ...
