Jimmy Olsen as Robert Evans

One fan’s imagining of Jimmy Olsen’s memoirs: “Did I turn into a giant turtle monster? I sure did. Did I drink the elastic serum? You bet. Did I marry a gorilla? And how. Do I regret any of it? NOT ON YOUR LIFE, PAL.” You know, if Jimmy Olsen was really Robert Evans, that would make a great comic book. :)

Fashion SWAT shoots fish in a barrel

The Fashion SWAT review on Something Awful is all about bad comic character costumes this time. While I’m surprised they could stick to only a dozen, one has to appreciate that they manage to get two Rob Liefeld drawings in there. How to explain Liefeld…If, back in the 1990’s, you ever saw a comic book cover and went “What is that thing?!?”, only to realize it was supposed to be a human, that would be a Liefeld-influenced cover. His characters always seem to have lots of muscles where people simply don’t have muscles, as well as inch-wide veins that stick out all over them and upper bodies that would cause them to tip over easily. Check out his gallery for some good examples. Back then, he largely plied his trade for Marvel and Image Comics. ...

Thanagarian Self-Esteem

“My work guarantees me a place in the halls of the immortals, while you are simply destined for the dirt. Think on that.” Rokara Soh, Thanagarian See, this sort of thing is why it’s hard to like Thanagarians. They seem to have way too much self-esteem. Go Rann! ;) (Sometimes I wish I could talk like that, though…) Quote courtesy of The Absorbacon, which can’t help but pull for Thanagar, being their source of knowledge and all. ...

Wonder! Science! Mystery Men! The Blue Beetle!

Comic book covers tend to be designed to get people to pick them up and buy them on impulse. If you think of your primary audience as being familiar with the characters, for instance, having an apparently dead hero on the cover is usually a good selling point. If, on the other hand, you’re just trying to convey “Action and Adventure Await,” I don’t think you can do much better than these covers from 1939-1942 Fox Comics. :) ...

Well, if you can't get Cobra Commander...

Dave’s Long Box reviews one of the more accomplished villains in the DC Universe: Kobra. He sounds a lot like Cobra Commander from GI Joe, but competent. (He beats up Batman.) Of course, you couldn’t get much less competent than Cobra Commander; his enemies weren’t exactly rocket scientists, yet they beat Cobra all the time. (Actually, now I’m wondering. Did GI Joe have a rocket scientist? And if they did, would he have been called Booster?) :) ...

Technicon 22

You know, I kind of remember this, but I have no idea why I never attended it when I was in Blacksburg. Maybe I was always broke by that time? Nah, it’s only $20. :) I wonder why the site shows up as black with black text, though.

Sin City reviewed in NY Press

There are two weird things in this review of Sin City: Is the plural of “comic” really “comix?” Is he actually insinuating that director Robert Rodriguez put in a swastika-shaped shuriken to appeal to a hypothetical Jewish media? (Fourth paragraph.) What the heck? Personally, I’m conflicted over seeing the movie in the theater. Pro: It’s directed by Robert Rodriguez. I like his El Mariachi series. Pro: I like the look of the film. The B&W effect looks interesting. ...
